Film Opening Inspirations by Larissa Brown

The setting of our opening sequence is a similar setting to Twilight's

Mise en scene:
Twilights opening sequence has inspired our company's use of mise en scene with the use of trees, grass, sticks and twigs contribute to the enigma we're trying to create. As these objects can be considered to be quite dangerous it helps establish what genre we're using. Our genre being thriller/horror, the low key lighting illustrates the danger and denotes the that someone is in a harmful situation and its supposed to make the audience feel a sense of fright. The costumes use of dark colours contribute to how the characters are feeling; revenge, fright, anger etc.

Camera:
We've used a similar establishing shot of the nature in the setting. It sets the time and establishes the weather. We filmed in cold conditions as our other inspirations of horror/thriller films have similar weather conditions. The use of high key lighting and warm weather conditions would subvert to our product 'Hunted' because it offers a positive image, the representations of thrillers and horrors are to be negative, dark. As the character in our opening sequence is a female, the camera shoots her at low angles to sow her position in the film as timid and vulnerable.

Editing:
In Twilight's opening sequence they've used a variety of jump shots and fast motion

Inspiration by Mark Reddie

This is the chase for the recent film 'The Twilight Saga: New Moon'. It is a similar genre to our film and it provides a lot of inspiration and gives us a lot of ideas regarding our opening sequence.

There may not be any credits shown in this scene to give us ideas for how we want our credits to be, but it is how we want our chase scene to look like. It is set in a wooded area and we filmed our opening scene in a place with many trees and the main character in our sequence is also a vampire, taking a lot of inspiration from Twilight.

However, in our chase scene there is only one person that is running, rather than someone actually chasing them. Our film also cuts away into another setting every now and then, which this scene doesn't.

Description of scene by Mark Reddie

Shot types
Mise en scene
Effect/Enigma
Description of scene
1
Establishing shot
Trees, mud, paths, cloudy sky, natural lighting
The establishing shot is to set the time and location; this shot is edited by using fast motion to exaggerate the time. The fast motion is also to show the dark natural lighting to emphasise the genre of the film
The camera pans around the trees in fast motion then tilts downwards to capture the first character running through the forest
2

Long shot
Forest; branches
This scene creates an enigma of a ‘chase’
The chase between Larima and Fatima is captured
3

Two shot, mid shot
House, dark room, 2 actors
A tense atmosphere is presented

Characters: two young males (Trey and Chris) shot in the kill scene
4

Long shot, mid shot
Hoodie
The effect of the shadow is that the audience becomes more eager.
There is a shadow of some someone, and the zooms on the knife
5
Jump shot, wide shot, close up
Fangs, Dark natural lighting to signify that the characters may be vampires or a dark spirit

The jump shot and cuts proceed back to the chase; Larima is hiding in branches trying to hide from Fatima (hunter). A close up of Larima is shown to see the emotion and relationship between characters

Props List (Mise-en-scene) by Mark Reddie

Since we are shooting our film mostly outside, props aren't really needed as much.
However, the props that we are using are:

  • Bed - this is used in the bedroom scene where the two young boys are murdered. They are in the bed when the hunter kills the two of them, they are sleeping and unaware of the threat that is posed over them.

  • Knife - this is once again used in the bedroom scene. However, you do not see the actual knife at all, but you see a shadow alongside the shadow of the murderer.

  • Fangs - these are used for the vampire. In the running scene with the vampire, there is a close-up of her teeth and this is where the fangs become effective and reveal a lot of the film.

Costume List (Mise-En-Scene) by Mark Reddie

Larima Harris would be wearing:

  • Black trousers
  • Green coat
  • Black shoes
All the colours that Larima are wearing are quite dark, even the green, which is more of a forest green. Since the film is going to be shot as it is getting dark, and it is in a wooded area, the blacks and greens blend in with the surroundings and shows that she is trying to hide or run away from someone.

Trey and Chris Harris would be wearing:
  • Pyjamas
They are wearing Pyjamas since in the scene that they are being shot in, they are in bed and don't need to be dressed up for a part where a costume is majorly needed. This shows that they are innocent, and sides you with the 'Harris' family, rather than the people that are hunting them.

The hunter would be wearing:

  • A hoodie
Only the hunter's shadow is shown in the opening sequence, so a costume isn't very important, but a hoodie covers the head and leaves a fairly plain shadow which reveals nothing from the story about who the hunter actually is.

Film Rating by Mark Reddie

For the opening sequence that we have shot, I would rate it as a 12A. This is due to the lack of violence and swear words, but the violence that is suggested in the film which parents may or may not want their children watching. However, there is not enough shown so that older children, becoming teenagers should not be allowed to see it on their own out of their own free will.

It is only a 12A as my film opening is targeted at teenagers/children around this age that would be interested, due to the recent uprise of supernatural films, especially vampire films, that are targeted at people of this age. Two examples of this is Twilight and The Woman In Black. They are both to do with the supernatural and have done very well in the box office, with revenues of $3,344,717,264 and $127,730,736 respectively.

This film rating challenges the typical conventions of a thriller, as most are usually 15s or 18s. However, unlike typical thrillers, this has significantly less violence in, and violent language is not used in it. There is no nudity, either. These three things, the prior two more so than the latter one, are typical conventions in a thriller, which is why they have such a high age rating.

Sample of Music: By Fatima Mohamed

CREDITS For the music goes to "CJONTHEBEAT".

This is the type of music that we wish to use for our movie sequence, as it creates a mysterious atmosphere. The bass of the music will go well with our first scene as there will be a chase in a forest. Along with the flashing to different scenes throughout the opening sequence of the film.

Risk Assessment by Mark Reddie

Carrying out a risk assessment is one way to make sure that our cast members are safe and that they don't not get harmed in anyway. Also due to the low budget this allows us to see how dangerous the area that we are filming in is, and to compare it to other groups risk assessments and see whether we should be safe, and moreover, lowers the risk of our equipment getting stolen since we know how dangerous the area is and whether we should or should not shoot there.

Music by Fatima Mohamed

The music for ‘Hunted’ we will be creating it ourselves, we want the sound to mesmerize and capture the attention of the audience. The sound we have chosen to create will fit in well with our two minute sequence as music plays an important part in every movie. When creating the music for our sequence we have to acknowledge the power it will have on our viewers, as we are trying to build up fear and anticipation in the two minutes we are given. The movie ‘Hunted’ is supposed to be a horror/ thriller movie and we will show this through the music used in each scene. Also music is important in the sense that there will be no dialogue, therefore there has to be a lot of work put into the music to express the emotions of each character.
